Los Gatos

Welcome to Los Gatos

La Rinconada de Los Gatos ("The Corner of the Cats")

The first building in Los Gatos was Forbes' Mill, and for many years the town was known by that name. Up until 1859, the only homes in Los Gatos were the Mill and a few cabins occupied by the workers. The country around Los Gatos was settled much more rapidly than the town itself. The name Los Gatos came from the settlers who found many wildcats roaming in the adjacent hills. This gave the name La Rinconada de Los Gatos (“The Corner of the Cats”) to the town.

The lumber industry commenced to grow in the mountains, and Los Gatos became a resting place. Eventually the building of the Santa Cruz Turnpike road placed it on the route of travel between Santa Cruz and San Jose.  People started to become attracted by the beauty of its location and enjoyable climate, and made it their home. In 1877, the South Pacific Coast Railroad was completed to that point, and it was at this time that more people from the surrounding area came to notice the beauty of what is now Los Gatos.
